Brown University

Most people know Brown University as one of the premier educational institutions in the nation. What people may not know is that Brown University is also an integral member of the Rhode Island community, contributing greatly to the fabric of their Providence home.

As a repeat user of construction services with ongoing construction projects and investments, Building Futures and Brown University have formed a partnership around how construction happens on campus - towards the socially conscious ideals of this esteemed institution.

The J. Walter Wilson Building, with work being performed by Shawmut Design and Construction, provided the perfect opportunity for a pilot project using AUP. With Shawmut Construction entering a memorandum of agreement to institute Building Futures' AUP, four graduates, all people of color residing in Providence, began their careers in the building trades through this pilot effort.

This successful pilot effort opened the door to a long term relationship; one that we hope will lead to AUP being integrated as an institutional policy.

With the J. Walter Wilson project now completed successfully, Brown University and Building Futures are working toward future construction projects to include:

  • The Warren Alpert Medical School, ground breaking ceremony was held on Monday, April 26, 2010
  • New Fitness/Aquatic Center - expected to open Summer 2010
  • Creative Arts Center - expected completion in 2010
  • Metcalf Chemistry Lab - Coming Soon
  • Faunce House - Ongoing

Ongoing successfully completed projects:

  • Rhode Island Hall - rededicated on October 16, 2009
